Princesses in Fairy Tales
There’s hundreds of fairy tales with princesses, many of them magically enchanted or looking to remove a curse. The most famous are well-known because of the movies made by Disney, but there are a lot more that many people have never heard of. Check out this list of fairy tales involving princesses, castles, maidens, talking cats and more.
Of course, the most popular today were the most popular a hundred years ago. Here’s a couple to read more on:
Cinderella – This fairytale is found in different versions all over the world. The plot is the same – a girl undeservedly and unfortunate enough to be living in squalor and hardship, and by chance is lifted up in fortune and lives a happy life.
The version most of us knows comes from the French writer Charles Perrault in the late seventeenth century. His story added the pumpkins, glass slipper and fairy godmother, making it by far the most popular version. Another version, Aschenputtel from the Brothers Grimm in Germany, is much darker, and involves chopping off feet and birds pecking the eyes out of the wicket stepsisters. Obviously not the version Disney chose to base their beloved movie on!
The Little Mermaid – This beloved and sad tale from Danish author Hans Christian Andersen is so popular there is a statue of the Little Mermaid in Copenhagen. It involves a mermaid who falls in love with a human prince. She exchanges her voice for a pair of human legs, and though her feet hurt terribly, she is able to dance most beautifully. In the Disney version, the prince falls in love with her, and after some misadventures, they kiss, turning Ariel into a full-fledged human princess. (The original version had no such happy ending, making one suspect that fairy tales weren’t originally written for children!)
Sleeping Beauty – Once upon a time, a king and queen invited fairies to act as godmothers to their newborn daughter, Princess Aurora. The fairies brought gifts such as musical ability and beauty, but one wicked fairy proclaimed she would die from the prick of a spindle when an adult. The last fairy undid some of the damage by modifying the curse to have her instead fall asleep for 100 years. The distraught parents ordered all spindles destroyed, but of course one remained hidden, and sure enough Aurora pricked her finger and fell into a deep sleep.
Sure enough, 100 years later, a prince battled through the thorns surrounding the enchanted castle where lay Aurora, and kissed her awake. They marry and live happily ever after – according to the renowned and Disney movie classic. Briar Rose is another tale similar to Sleeping Beauty.
